FDA Issues Alert Over Recalled Plant-Based Butter Containing Yeast, Mold, and E. coli

Concerns over contaminated ingredients have driven a surge in public interest regarding the safety of certain grocery items, particularly alternative dairy products. Amid these heightened consumer concerns, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a risk classification concerning a recent recall involving popular plant-based butter.

A voluntary recall was initiated on September 11th, affecting more than 1,300 cases of Miyoko's Creamery European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter. The FDA report specifies that the product was recalled due to serious concerns regarding contamination from yeast, mold, and E. coli. This development has prompted immediate caution among consumers who may have purchased the affected goods.

The regulatory body classified this recall as a Class II risk level. Understanding this classification is crucial for readers: it means that use of or exposure to the product 'may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,' or alternatively, where 'the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.' While the FDA has not provided information confirming if anyone fell ill after consuming the affected product, the contamination concerns necessitate extreme caution.

The recall notice covered a wide geographical area, affecting ten states: Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin. Consumers should be aware that this was a voluntary action taken to ensure public safety across these regions.

For consumer identification purposes, the affected product is sold in eight-ounce packages bearing a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 857554005773. Secondary packaging sells these units in six-packs. The FDA report provides specific details for tracking contaminated batches: the affected product's solid bleached sulfate carton packaging has a lot number of 07871 and a best-by date of November 5, 2026. On the secondary packaging, the corresponding lot number is 1007871, also with a best-by date of November 5, 2026.

The FDA report emphasizes that 'Product is perishable and stored refrigerated/frozen,' advising consumers on proper handling. Furthermore, while the recall notice did not provide clear instructions regarding returning the product to the place of purchase for a possible refund, such information was also unavailable on the Miyoko's website. It should be noted that Prosperity Organic Foods, based in Boise, Idaho, acquired Miyoko's Creamery last year and had not immediately returned an ABC News request for comment regarding the recall.

Consumers who possess the recalled product must pay close attention to these details. The manufacturer advises that both primary packaging (wax paper wrapping) and secondary packaging (corrugated case for shipment) are involved in the recall scope. Due to the nature of yeast, mold, and E. coli contamination, consumers should exercise extreme caution and follow all local health department guidelines regarding disposal or return of any suspected contaminated goods.
